LOFAR Lightning Imaging; Mapping Lightning with Nanosecond Precision

چکیده
Lightning mapping technology has proven instrumental in understanding lightning. In this work we present a pipeline that can use lightning observed by the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) radio telescope to construct a 3D map of the flash. We show that LOFAR has unparalleled precision, on the order of meters, even for lightning flashes that are over 20 km outside the area enclosed by LOFAR antennas (∼3,200 km), and can potentially locate over 10,000 sources per lightning flash. We also show that LOFAR is the first lightning mapping system that is sensitive to the spatial structure of the electrical current during individual lightning leader steps. Keypoints: • We can map lightning leader evolution with the LOFAR radio telescope in 3 dimensions • The position accuracy can be on the order of meters above a surface area of 3,200 km and the timing accuracy is around 5 ns Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey 08544, USA Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering, Linnuniversitetet, 35195 Växjö, Sweden c ©2018 American Geophysical Union. One case of a lightning strike leads to death: case report
Background: Lightning is one of the most mysterious phenomena of nature that also, it has caused many financial and human losses. In tropical and sub-tropical countries, death due to thunderbolt is not unusual, and even tragic events may occur at high altitudes. Lightning physics is complex and not completely clear. Usually, the clouds are heavily pregnant and high voltages and amperages, they ...

As a thunderstorm approaches a fixed asset (90% of the time) where people are located, VHF cloud lightning mapping provides 10s of minutes of lead time before the first cloud-to-ground strokes reach this asset. At times when a thunderstorm develops directly over the fixed asset (~10% of the time), the cloud flash detection efficiency exceeding 90% maximizes lead time during thunderstorm growth ...

3D mapping system like the LMA Lightning Mapping Array are a leap forward in lightning observation. LMA measurements has lead to an improvement on the analysis of the fine structure of lightning, allowing to characterize the duration and maximum extension of the cloud fraction of a lightning flash. During several years of operation, the first LMA deployed in Europe has been providing a large am...

Using FORTE photodiode detector (PDD) observations of lightning, we have determined the geographic distribution of nighttime flash rate density. We estimate the PDD flash detection efficiency to be 62% for total lightning through comparison to lightning observations by the TRMM satellite’s Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS), using cases in which FORTE and TRMM viewed the same storm. We present here...

During the past two years there have been major breakthroughs in the field of lightning detection and advance warning. As presented at the last seminar, a completely automated system developed for use at Orlando International Airport showed great promise for future application within the munitions safety arena. Since this system was formally commissioned in early 1993, a less complex operating ...
